Adam Robertson by Bailey Bridge

Bailey Bridge Southwold - Walberswick

Adam Robertson Kessingland & Southwold Lib Dem campaigner said: I firmly believe that Bailey Bridge needs to be refurbished due to severe corrosion, but this needs to be done when it is least disruptive to the tourist trade which both serve Southwold and Walberswick. This is not in July and August when restrictions are lifted on social distancing, and when tourists will come to visit both places. This is why I agree with the www.change.org which has been set up asking for Suffolk County Council and Suffolk Highways to relook at other alternatives, so residents and businesses are not severely impacted by the closure of Bailey Bridge, especially as they start to recover from the economic effects of Covid-19. I will work with Lib Dem District Councillor David Beavan to look at other alternatives, which can see the Bailey Bridge repaired and where businesses and residents are not affected severely when it has to close for repairs. Wands on cycle route along Valley Road, Ipswich

Wonderful wands?

The increasingly tatty (and in some cases, battered) wands installed along Valley Road, Ipswich after the first lock-down, are set to stay for a further 6 months following an internal decision by the County Council. As with the initial set-up decision, this did not involve consultation with local Councillors or residents. The wands, funded by Government, were intended to encourage safe cycling. We argued that investng in and maintaining well-marked and safe Cycle surfaces, free of debris and damage would have been a better use of the money. The wands have made it harder to keep the cycle lanes clean and debris-free as the mechanical cleaner cannot operate and they have to be manually swept at extra cost.

Police must do more to tackle violence and harassment against women

The weekend's events on Clapham common, and what led to them have been disturbing on many levels. The Capital is if of course a different policing area, but many people I've spoken to in Suffolk share my grave concerns about the unacceptable and heavy-handed policing of the Sarah Everard vigil, its impact on confidence in the police, and the message it conveyed about society's response to issues of gender violence, women's safety and the right to express public grief.

Suffolk Family Carers

Yesterday I proposed a motion at Suffolk County Council to create an "all unpaid carers opt-in" database administered by the respected charity #SuffolkFamilyCarers to help the #unpaidcarers of Suffolk. This would allow county to target support at those that most need it. We literally have no idea how many such carers there are in the country/county or what their needs might be - but the estimated 1400 carers just in Woodbridge (!!!) have saved the state (eg us) £20MILLION over the last year. They need all the help they can get. Wonderfully, Suffolk Conservatives seconded this motion, and it was passed "by general acclamation" by all of Suffolk County Council. So pleased - because so badly needed! #LibDemsCare
